Chapter Five
Something whispered through my mind, pulling me up from a deep, dreamless sleep. My name. Someone was calling my name, and then a hand touched my shoulder, a heavy, male hand, and I remembered where I was.
Two seconds after, the pain hit.
“Mother of God,” I moaned. “Did a Mack truck hit me while I was out?”
“No, but don’t worry,” Devin said. “The pain will pass.”
I opened one eye and peered at him skeptically. “What the hell? All we did was have sex.”
“We did a little more than that. Don’t you remember?”
He pulled me up from where I lay on a bed that was not the one I’d passed out on. This one was maybe a Queen with a simple wooden frame dressed in brown plaid flannel sheets and a red, blue, and gold quilted comforter. I sat up gingerly, holding my ribs, which hurt like a mother, then pressed a hand against my abs, which ditto. And then felt the blood rush from my head when my leg accidentally brushed my limp, aching penis.
“You let me have sex with a vampire.” I pushed him away, though my hand had so little oomph behind it, he smirked at me. “What kind of friend does that?”
“The kind who’s looking out for you. Here, drink this.”
He handed me a tall glass of what looked like orange juice.
“What is it?”
“I know for a fact that feeding doesn’t affect your brain, so quit being stupid.”
He held the glass out and my eyes followed his hand up his arm to his shoulder. I pinched the bridge of my nose with shaky fingers. He was still naked and so was I.
“Come on, drink it,” he said in a softer voice. “Elizabet took too much. That’s part of why you’re sore. The juice will help your body recover better.”
“I’m sore because she bit my penis,” I said flatly, but I took the glass. My throat was parched and I was woozy.
And he was right. I’d given blood before and knew what it felt like to be a pint low. The juice would help.
“Tell me it’s got a pain killer in it or something.”
“Sorry. That’ll come later, after a shower.” He sat down on the edge of the bed beside me. “I guess you have questions.”
I snorted. “Ya think?”
He ignored the snarkiness, tapped the bottom of the glass, and waited until I’d taken a huge gulp before speaking. “You’re the third pet I’ve brought to her. It’s part of our tithe, our oath to her when she takes us on.”
“As a pet?” The jury was still out on whether or not that was an insult.
“Technically, we’re blood slaves.”
I choked on the juice, wheezed in gasping breaths until my throat cleared. “I didn’t sign on for that.”
Devin smiled. “Relax. It takes months for the bond to cement, and there’s a lot more to it than letting Elizabet feed off of you. She could do that to anyone.”
“But she wants to keep me and, what, chain me here like an animal?”
He shot me an exasperated look.
